Syriac wine
From altar to table.
Midyat lies at the heart of Tur Abdin, a plateau whose name means “the mountain of the servants of God” in Syriac. Monasteries, foremost among them Mor Gabriel, founded in AD 397, have stood side by side here with stone villages and vineyards for centuries.
In the Syriac tradition, wine belongs to the altar before the table. Its place in the Holy Liturgy made viticulture in these lands more than a livelihood: it became part of the faith.
