Sura Syriac Wine House · Midyat

About us.

In the fertile lands of Mesopotamia, the vine is a story as old as humankind. In this land stretching between the Tigris and the Euphrates, the grape harvest has for thousands of years been more than a harvest: it has been a gathering of families, villages and generations.

A story that carries the heritage of yesterday into today, and on to tomorrow: Sura.

On the stone terraces of Tur Abdin, in the shadow of monasteries and along the narrow lanes of its villages, vineyard knowledge passed down from generation to generation is one of the deepest memories of Syriac culture. This knowledge lives not in books but in hands: from grandfather to grandchild, from master to apprentice, from one season to the next.

In the Syriac tradition, wine belongs to the altar before the table. That is why, in these lands, the vineyard is more than a livelihood; it is part of faith and belonging. Grapes left to dry on the rooftops, cool stone cellars and patiently passing seasons are notes of the same ancient rhythm.

Sura is the home of this memory in Midyat. In a traditional space with carved stone walls and a wooden ceiling, we keep alive the heritage handed down by our ancestors and carefully preserve it, so that it may be passed on whole to tomorrow.

For us, wine culture is the story of the soil, of labour, of patience and of a faith that has endured for centuries. Under this roof we want to keep alive the traces of Mesopotamia, the warmth of Syriac homes and the spirit of a tradition that always keeps its door open to guests.

We see it as our responsibility to tell this story and to share our devotion to the stone, the soil and the people of Midyat. Because a culture lives only as long as it is told.

As Sura Syriac Wine House, we embrace our past and walk towards the future with the strength we draw from our roots.
